Broiled Eggplant on Another Friday Night

Wednesday, 31 July 2013

Eggplant is really one of my all time favorite foods. Any excuse to make eggplant something and in summertime we can pick them right off of the vine here in our garden – thanks to Ed Lynch! Our friend Victoria Goldfarb called and invited us for another Shabbat dinner and to see Eden and meet Eden’s boyfriend Leo - from Paris. Yes. Lovely evening. I happened to have leftover walnut sauce from the dinner that I made the weekend before for Virginia Ripley and her girlfriends (pre-pre wedding dinner) so the natural thing for me to bring was one of my all time favorite recipes – broiled eggplant with walnut sauce – from my new favorite cookbook “The Savory Way,” by Deborah Madison who, for those not in the know, was the...

Virginia’s Wedding Shower

Thursday, 25 July 2013

Sunday, July 21st, today was the day. And it was lovely. The bride to be was beaming and laughing. Her Mama was too. What could be better? All the girlfriends were here. The food was delicious (made by Marmalade – mostly) and the presents were excellent! Wine and lemonade flowed. My responsibilities were extremely limited and I got a lot of credit! All I did was bake two cakes (carrot cake and Road Oil Chocolate cake); make two salads (fruit and arugula with fig); and clean up the place (which Alan helped me with). Suzanne did the rest – including bringing over all the ridiculously delicious food, tables and chairs, party bags full of favors galore. AND, she ironed the tablecloths. A cinch (for me) and what a...

Gingin’s Pre-Wedding Girlfriend Party With a Lovely Beet Salad

I met Virginia when Alex was a month or so old. She was 6 or 7 and couldn’t have been more beautiful herself. When Alex was 18 months old, Virginia’s mother Cindy Ripley of Luna Garcia fame (lunagarcia.com) offered up Virginia as a Mother’s Helper - a notion I could not resist. And that was the beginning of a beautiful thing. I was a single mom and Virginia, Alex and I spent every Saturday together (or almost every Saturday) for so many years. She went through it all with me and had the final say on any guy who wanted to date me (there were only 3)....

Cooking With Kids – Grissini

Wednesday, 03 July 2013

I always love to cook with kids. My kid. My step-kids. Their friends. My nieces and nephews and their friends. My friend’s kids. Big kids, little kids. It doesn’t matter. Everyone can help and I love it when they do. I don’t always get cooperation but when I do it makes me really really happy. My mom taught me how to cook. She is such an excellent cook and she taught me well. So I like to carry on that tradition. This past weekend I suggested to Alex that we cook together – maybe with a friend or two of his. He readily agreed and we made a plan to make grissini (he says they’re breadsticks) on Sunday. Sunday turned into a busy day. I rode my bike to Palos Verdes with Alan and Alex went surfing (he was gone...
