Peach Polenta Cake

I found this cake in an email that I received from the Gourmandise School. The Gourmandise school is a sweet little cooking school at the top of the new Mall in Santa Monica. I’ve taken a few classes there and I always enjoy myself. This recipe grabbed me. It’s the perfect summer dessert recipe and it’s a very special cake. Stone-fruit – peaches, olive oil, polenta and almond flour. It’s a beautiful, dense cake with a wonderful depth of flavor and texture. The addition of honey that sinks to the bottom makes it all so delicious and decadent. My Dad loves pies. I have vivid memories of going to Dupars in the Valley with my Dad when I was a little kid and ordering pie with him. He has hysterical stories that he tells about his interactions with the Dupar’s waitresses who I remember would wear uniforms with aprons. My dad is a charmer and I’m sure the old gals all loved him. I grew up thinking that my father’s favorite pies were banana cream pie and chocolate cream pie. Although it’s true that he loves those, his deepest pie dream is Cherry pie. I did not learn this until two months ago. Since then I have been working to perfect my crust and pie making ability. I know that I just wrote about peanut butter cookies and I posted a delicious recipe, however…. This weekend my wonderful nephew Zac and his wonderful girlfriend Lauren came down to visit from Santa Barbara where they are going to school. They are so much fund to have around! We love New Year’s day in this house. It’s a hopeful day and it’s always Jared’s birthday. People aren’t usually in a lousy mood even when hung-over from New Year’s Eve. We have a party every year to welcome in the New Year and to celebrate Jared. Last year I posted the important recipes for Hoppin’ John (blackeyed peas for good luck); and collard greens (for wealth). I really like reading David Lebovitz’s blog. Someone set it up so that it automatically pops up in my email. I think Sele Nadel-Hayes did that for me. Various people help me in various ways with my computer. Sele is one of my helpers. Issa is another. Alex is another. Jared is another. Etc. I also like David Lebovitz’s app ‘Living the Sweet Life in Paris’ – especially when I’m in Paris. The app is about pastry shops, sweet shops, etc. from David Lebovitz’s view. I like his view. I told my brother Phil that my ‘book group’ was coming over for dinner and that I was making baked apples for dessert. Although I’ve been quiet for a couple months, the kitchen has not lay fallow. Not too much creative cooking but lots of jamming including orange marmalade; apricot; two kinds of peach – smooth and chunky; strawberry; fig; plum; grape. That’s kind of a lot for an urban gal with no fruit trees so to speak. Well…. only a couple of lime trees, lemon and grapefruit, oh and tangerine, and a baby apricot. . . My Mother-in-law Ellie Seltzer, wife of the late Bernie Seltzer (father-in-law and beloved father of my dear darling husband), has been in town visiting with us. Having Ellie here has been a total treat. Why did we ever wait so long to bring her out for a visit. Ellie is awesome and enjoyable and an excellent houseguest and kind and wise. We love her and have loved having her here. One of the things that I enjoy enormously when we go visit Ellie in Florida – besides being around her - is her mandelbrod.
